Job Classifications

Drivers & Apparatus Operators

Drivers & Apparatus Operators are responsible for driving fire apparatus to and from emergency scenes in addition to operating the apparatus while on scene.

This may include:

  • Operating the pump on a fire scene/ setting up water supply operations.
  • Moving water from ponds, rivers and other sources of water using a Tanker truck to the fire ground.
  • Operating onboard equipment generators on Rescue 39 for motor vehicle accident extrication utilizing hydraulic Hurst tools.
  • Operating an onboard air Cascade system to refill empty SCBA air bottles. Drivers & Apparatus Operators are required to complete an Emergency Vehicle Operators Course and show proficiency in both driving and operating each apparatus before being cleared to drive them.

Interior Firefighter

Interior Firefighters are trained in all skills of an Exterior Firefighter, in addition to specialized training for operating inside a structure. This training is meant to prepare firefighters for working in low visibility, extreme heat, and small/ confined spaces.

Roles of an Interior Firefighter are:

  • Conducting primary and secondary searches of victims, and rescuing such victims.
  • Locating and Extinguishing fires.
  • Conducting overhaul operations looking for extensions of a fire/ “hot spots”.
  • Conducting salvage operations to save what they can.
  • Investigating alarms and other emergencies.
  • Operating from ladders and roofs when needed.

Interior Firefighters are required to complete the Interior Firefighter Operations 1 course, in addition to survival and SCBA (air pack) confidence courses in addition to courses required to be an Exterior Firefighter. All trainings are held locally in Broome County.

Exterior Firefighter

Exterior Firefighters operate outside of a residence or building. A few examples of the responsibilities of Exterior Firefighters are:

  • Connecting the arriving engine to a fire hydrant.
  • Pulling and laying out hose lines prior to being charged with water.
  • Placing ladders all sides of a building.
  • Assisting with door control/ monitoring who enters a building (accountability tag collection)
  • Assisting interior crews with air bottle changes.
  • Laying out tools and equipment for easier access for interior crews.

Exterior Firefighters are required to complete the “Basic Exterior Firefighter Operations” and a basic HAZMAT response course, which instructs students on basic fire ground and HAZMAT incident operations and skills. All required classes are held locally in Broome County.

Fire Police:

Fire Police is responsible for traffic control and scene control on an emergency scene. Fire Police controls traffic flows, and closes roadways, diverting traffic to alternate routes, and allowing emergency responders to the fire scene. Fire Police members are required to take a NYS Fire Police Course and a traffic management course.

EMS Team Members:

EMS Team Members assist our trained EMS staff and ambulance agencies across Broome County with medical emergencies. With different EMT certifications available, you get to choose what you want to do.

Every call the CBFC responds to, whether a medical emergency or not, there is a job for a EMS Team Member.

Roles of an EMS Team Member are:

  • Respond to medical emergency calls.
  • Perform CPR and other life saving measures prior to ambulance arrival.
  • Assist arriving ambulance agencies as needed.
  • Conduct vitals checks on patients.
  • Set up rehab stations for prolonged incidents.

EMS Team Members must refresh annually on basic first aid and hold a valid CPR certification, both obtainable with the CBFC! Additionally, EMS Team Members are encouraged to attend a NYS EMT-B course.
